MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man accused of going on a deadly, hours-long shooting spree across the city of Memphis back in September 2022 is set to face a judge in court Tuesday morning.

Ezekiel Kelly was supposed to start trial on Tuesday, but earlier this year, a judge decided to delay it.

Prosecutors say they are ready to proceed; however, Kelly’s attorneys requested the delay that moved the trial date, saying they weren’t ready to face a jury due to the magnitude of the case.

“This is not a normal case, Judge. It’s a case that involves seven crime scenes, three homicides. It involves at least approximately 80 witnesses on behalf of the government. We are in the process of investigating 400 witnesses,” said Michael Scholl, Kelly’s defense attorney.

Kelly faces more than two dozen felony charges, including three charges of first-degree murder. His attorney says he is the first person in the state of Tennessee to be charged with terrorism.

The state has told the judge they are equipped for what’s next while laying out the dozens of those who could be called to the stand when the trial gets underway.
