MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The investigation into drink tampering at Frida’s Mexican Restaurant at Carriage Crossing in Collierville has been closed, the company announced in a social media post on Wednesday.
The company posted on Facebook, saying that after providing police with video footage, receipts, and staff statements, “The Collierville Police Department has completed their investigation of Frida’s Restaurante Mexicano.”
WREG reached out to the Collierville Police Department, and they confirmed the investigation was closed.
“We will confirm that we have closed the report, and no criminal violations were found. They were cooperative with the investigation and provided everything we asked for,” said David Townsend, Assistant Chief of the Collierville Police Department.
WREG spoke with Frida’s General Manager, Erik Gonzales following the news.
“I knew I was innocent the whole time,” said Gonzales.
He says that is why he was willing to give Collierville Police video footage, receipts, and staff statements.
“They never stepped foot in our restaurant. And I don’t know how we got involved with everything,” Gonzales said. “Some people thought they could handle their alcohol and the truth is they couldn’t.”
Frida’s said that before the investigation was finished, false claims continued to spread, and they are now asking people to remove the false posts and/or retract their statements.
“People need to understand that sometimes people post things online without knowing the truth… Don’t believe something without facts,” said Gonzales.
Gonzales says all the claims are false and it’s getting way out of hand.
“The things that they have been saying about us racially, threats, people calling the restaurant to say some crazy, wild things,” he said. “I’m just happy it’s over with and that we were proven innocent.”
Gonzales says it’s going to be hard, but he and the business are moving forward and he hopes the city will move on with him.
The entire investigation began after a woman was found dead in a retention pond last month in East Shelby County. Family members say the woman was at Casa Mexicana, which is the other restaurant being investigated.
Kristen Fundo’s husband said she was meeting a friend at the restaurant, and her bill shows she had two margaritas and food during the more than two-hour dinner.
Collierville police say the next day someone filed a report about “possibly someone drugging them” on the same night, and at the same restaurant, where Fundo and her friend were. They wouldn’t give further details, nor would they say if it could be connected to Fundo’s fatal crash.
Townsend says the investigation into Casa Mexicana has not been closed but notes that “no evidence of wrongdoing in any case has been found so far.”
