MEMPHIS, Tenn. — We told the story and you came to the rescue, donating more than $28,000 to the 81-year-old woman who was living in her car outside her dilapidated South Memphis home.
Christine Marshall was in disbelief after hundreds of donations came in overnight to help her rebuild her house. She had no idea how much money had been donated until we showed her.
“It’s a blessing for the community to reach out like that,” her son Antoine Hardin said.
Marshall, who’s affectionately known as “Mama,” has lived in car for the last three years.
While Mama struggles to speak after being diagnosed with throat cancer, she mustered up the strength to thank the generous Memphians who have helped her out.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” she said, and wrote on a piece of paper, “Thank you for your help. I love you all.”
Her son Antoine Hardin, who was responsible for putting the GoFundMe together, wanted to thank everyone, as well.
“I want to thank Channel 3 for this because it’s been a blessing, so we can get everything going and trying to get everything rebuilt and get this together. I want to see her happy, she’s been hanging in there,” he said.
Marshall had previously turned down invitations to come live with her son because her home was getting broken into.
The family is currently looking for contractors to help rebuild the home. Hardin says Mama is now staying with him while they clear the inside of the home in order to make repairs.
The City of Memphis say the city’s Division of Housing and Community Development will also look at the property to see what they can do.
The GoFundMe is still accepting donations here.
