Community to gather at civil rights museum in response to Tyre Nichols state trial verdict

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — On Thursday afternoon, community members will gather in the courtyard of the National Civil Rights Museum in response to the “not guilty” verdict in state court for officers charged in Tyre Nichols’ death.

The family of Tyre Nichols and community organizers say they’ll discuss the verdict and grieve the loss and legacy of Nichols.

Vickie Terry with the Memphis branch of the NAACP says she’s been following the case. She argues justice was not given to Nichols’ family, however, she says it’s important to remember that all officers were found guilty of some charges in the federal trial.

“I think that what we need to do is make sure that we stay calm and use a calm head right now because I don’t want anything to happen to anybody else like Tyre Nichols,” said Terry.

The three officers will soon be sentenced for their federal crimes.

Demetrius Haley faces the most prison time. He was convicted on four counts and faces life in prison.

Justin Smith and Tadarrius Bean face up to 20 years after being convicted of witness tampering.

Both Emmitt Martin and Desmond Mills made plea deals in the federal and state trials. Their sentencing has not been scheduled.
