Closed Peppertree Apartments likely to be listed for foreclosure

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — New details are emerging regarding the future of the closed Peppertree Apartments as attorneys for the troubled complex return to environmental court.

HUD confirmed with WREG, the property, which has been shut down since residents moved out two years ago, is soon to be scheduled for foreclosure.

In the summer of 2022, the second-floor walkway collapsed, sending two people, including a child, to the hospital.

The WREG investigators uncovered the fact that inspectors had sounded the alarm on potentially hazardous walkways at the property a year before that.

Peppertree’s attorney says we may see the court appoint a receiver for the complex.

HUD released the following statement on the status of the property below,

“HUD performed a relocation of all of the residents, and the property is currently vacant and still owned by the original ownership group. Because the property had an FHA-insured mortgage, the property will be scheduled for foreclosure by HUD. HUD is in contact with the City of Memphis about the future of the property after the foreclosure sale, consistent with current use restrictions on the property.”
