SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — Mississippi had the highest number of infant deaths in the country.
Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto said they want to change that by educating more women about the importance of prenatal care.
Saturday, the hospital is scheduled to host a baby fair.
The hospital told WREG the event is open to expectant moms and new moms in DeSoto and Shelby Counties.
There will be lots of giveaways, free brunch, free car seat checks and new parent and baby safety classes, but the real emphasis will be on prenatal care.
Health experts said a healthy mom means a healthy baby.
“We deliver about one baby a day with no prenatal care. So, usually when that happens we just don’t have any history on the mom. So, sometimes those babies are sicker than we anticipated,” said OBGYN nurse Candace Doddridge.
The Baby Fair is from 10am – 2pm at the main entrance of Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto.
