MEMPHIS, Tenn. — On Monday, Shelby County Commissioners are expected to take up a final vote as they need to sign off on a budget by the end of the month.

The fiscal year 2026 budget goes into effect July 1.

Your tax dollars and how they could be used will be the topic of conversation.

There are some amendments that will need to be ironed out before a spending plan can be passed.

Last week, Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris requested some last minute changes when it comes to cutting property taxes, to the tune of a $0.70 tax rate cut. The current tax rate in Shelby County is $3.39 per $100 of assessed value. Harris’ proposal would bring it down to $2.69.

Harris’ budget also calls for doubling the amount spent on new construction projects from $75 million to $150 million.

“That’s going to help us respond to the need  to build a new public hospital because Regional One is degrading. It’ll help us respond to the need to build new schools,” he said.

He also wants the county to get more involved in public safety and invest $6 million in a crime lab.

The county commission will now go over the mayor’s budget during a commission meeting at 3 p.m. Monday.
