City to open cooling centers over the weekend

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Three cooling centers will open Saturday and Sunday to help Memphians get through the next heat wave, the city announced Friday.

The heat index this weekend is forecasted to be 105 degrees.

Those who want to escape the high temperatures can go to the following locations:

Memphis Area Transit Authority is providing transportation to these sites for those who need it. Individuals who need a ride can call 636-2525.

The centers will be open until 8 p.m. Citizens can also cool down at malls, shopping centers, libraries and community centers during their normal hours.

The Office of Emergency Management is working with area organizations to help citizens stay safe through the summer. Police and fire department personnel are also conducting wellness checks on those who are at risk.
