MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis City Council passed a budget for the next fiscal year and it includes a property tax increase and new fees.
The property tax increase is 49 cents, which is down from the 75-cent increase that Mayor Paul Young originally asked for.
The council also voted to increase the solid waste fee $12 and the auto registration fee for passenger vehicles $30.
By a vote of 8-5, council members approved a budget that includes an additional $15 million for the Memphis Police Department, which was just added yesterday.
However, some council members were blindsided by the request. “Quite literally at the last hour, we are being given two sentences to say you have to move 15 million dollars and no information about how and why we got to this point,” said City Council member Jerri Green.
“The police need their money just like every other entity needs their money with no questions, no accountability and no oversight,” said Councilwoman Yolanda Cooper-Sutton.
“Good bad or indifferent, this will be the most consequential budget the city of Memphis passes, full stop. Because the slightest screw-up today could have an exponential impact in a year, two years, and three years and longer down the road,” Councilman Chase Carlisle said. “You’re either growing or dying, and the fact of the matter is, the city is flat to dying. Until we figure out how to make economic development a priority, these issues will remain.”
