MEMPHIS, Tenn. — There’s no age limit when it comes to serving others. That’s what one Walker Homes resident believes after spending his retirement years doing what brings him joy — helping others.

People living in the Walker Homes neighborhood know that when they see this truck parked at the corner of Rochester and Mitchell, they’re in for a treat.

The chef behind the meal is 67-year-old Robert Campbell.

“I retired about 10 years ago, and I work more now than I ever did since I retired,” said Campbell.

Having lived in the community his entire life, Campbell is known among residents primarily for his food truck.

When he first opened the food truck roughly 11 years ago, he sold the food and gave the leftovers away. However, that business plan didn’t last long.

“A lot of people was glad to get it. So, for the past ten years, I just go right up there on the corner of Rochester and Mitchell and I’d just give it away,” Campbell said.

Every holiday, Campbell buys tons of food using his senior citizens card, spends days preparing the meals by himself, and then gives it away to anyone who pops up at his truck.

“And people talking about ‘You love to cook?’. No, I don’t because when you cook, you got to cook everything right because if I mess up one time they’re going to say ‘Aww man, I got some bad stuff,'” he said.

Campbell’s cooking isn’t the only thing he’s known for. He also has a lawn care service, and much of the work he does is free as well.

“Some days I might just say I just feel like blessing some people, because I know when you do good, good follows you,” said Campbell.

Campbell says the desire to give and serve others was ingrained in him by his mother. And he says even though he’s retired, he has no plans on slowing down.

“When am I supposed to get old? I don’t know. I don’t feel it,” he said. “I just like doing it, and I’m blessed.”
