MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A judge denied bond Tuesday for an 18-year-old charged in the murders of two students near Booker T. Washington High School.
Valdemar Patterson is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the April 24 broad-daylight shooting that killed 17-year-old Christian Brown and 18-year-old Darrius Wadley.
During a preliminary hearing, defense asked for a bond to be set; an assistant district attorney argued against it, citing public safety concerns, according to a release from D.A. Steve Mulroy’s office.
Police say an Infiniti pulled into the South City apartment complex at Mississippi Boulevard and Lauderdale.
Surveillance video shows four suspects, all armed with guns, getting out and walking through the complex and shooting both victims multiple times, police said.
As they got back into the Infiniti, police say Patterson was shot by someone inside the apartment complex. He fell out of the car onto the ground.
Patterson was later dropped off at a hospital.
Authorities are still searching for additional suspects in the case.
