MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Binghampton mother is spending this Mother’s Day at the hospital after her daughter was shot in the head.

“It brought a real tear to my eyes. I cried when I saw that baby,” Eric Anthony said.

Anthony, a neighbor, told WREG that he’s still rattled after shots were fired near his home at the Tillman Cove Apartments.

“I heard the gunshots. Boom. Boom. boom. boom. boom. boom. boom,” Anthony said. “Somebody else retaliating with pistol sounds.”

At 3:00 a.m., officers responded to a shooting call in the 200 block of Binghampton Square.

Not knowing where the gunfire came from, he says he ran to make sure his family was ok and then went outside to check on his neighbors.

“I saw a little kid run up to me, and I looked at him and he couldn’t even say nothing. I said, “What’s going on? What’s going on?” Anthony said. “I had to make him talk. He finally told me. He said, “My little sister got hit in the head with a bullet.”

When officers arrived, they spoke with the mother of the victim (witness #1).

She told officers that her daughter (witness #2) walked into her room to tell her that her sister (the victim) was shot in the head.

Officers spoke with the witness #2, who said she was doing her hair when she heard shots being fired.

She said she looked over to the victim and noticed her leg twitching. When she walked up to her, she noticed that the victim had a gunshot wound to her head.

“The kid was upstairs on the floor with a bloody towel on her head,” Anthony said. “The mama was hysterical just crying and screaming.”

Witness #1 said she was asleep in her room and didn’t hear any shots being fired and her other children were asleep with her.

The victim was taken to Le Bonheur in critical condition. They were diverted to Regional One due to the injury.

Fortunately, her condition was later downgraded to non-critical.

The gunmen were nowhere in sight.

“You’re not hitting your target, who you’re looking for,” Anthony said.” “That’s not gangster.”

Police have not released a motive for the shooting.

Anthony said that as a former gang member, he knows firsthand how dangerous the streets can be.

That’s why he is pleading with those in his community to stop the violence before someone else has to suffer the consequences.

“We need to put these guns down and pick up the Bible or pick up each other and stop kicking down each other,” Anthony said.

MPD has not released any suspect information.
