MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police have made an arrest in connection with the shooting deaths of two Memphis-Shelby County Schools students.

Valdemar Patterson,18, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

On Thursday, officers responded to the shooting on Mississippi Boulevard near South Lauderdale Street, steps away from Booker T. Washington High School.

According to Deputy Chief Webb Kirkdoffer, two males were pronounced dead on the scene. Memphis Police did not give the ages or names of the victims.

Arrest records showed that Patterson arrived at Methodist Hospital the day of the shooting and was later arrested that night.

WREG is working to find out why he was there and if he had any injuries or gunshot wounds.

Bond has not been set yet for Valdemar Patterson, but he is expected to be in court on Monday morning.

This weekend, Memphis Police posted photos of suspects they believed were connected to the homicide and asked the public for help finding them.

At this time, there is no word on any other arrests being made in this case.

Unfortunately, over the past few weeks, WREG has reported on several instances of deadly gun violence involving young people.

Shelby County Commissioner Charlie Caswell tells WREG it’s important for community leaders and the youth to form a relationship.

“You have to look for those opportunities to build the resilience, to bounce back from some of the trauma and things that we know happened to you,” Caswell said. “And so I just say be intentional about reaching out to mentors that are in your community, like myself and others who are willing to sit down and work with you, help you get on the right track. But you have to reach out for that help.”

This upcoming Thursday, Commissioner Caswell and other community leaders will host a ‘Day of Prayer’ at the Pursuit of God Church.

They’ll also inform Memphis students about available resources and organizations to help them stay on a safe path.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.
