HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. — Helena-West Helena Police say a 44-year-old man impregnated a 15-year-old at least once, but possibly three times.
William Watson is officially charged with rape and now the victim’s mother could face charges as well.
“You have to look at what kind of quality of life she will have for the remainder of her life and what kind of life those kids will have,” said Helena-West Helena Police Chief Virgil Green.
Chief Green said the 15-year-old has three children: a 2-year-old, a 1-year-old and a newborn.
He said DNA test results show Watson is the 1-year-old’s father.
They’re now waiting for results on the other two kids.
The investigation launched in April.
Watson’s said to be a family friend, but neighbors told WREG the suspect did maintenance for their surrounding properties and could regularly be seen cutting the grass.
“He cut my yard maybe about a week or so ago,” said one neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous.
She said Watson was the property owner’s handyman.
“To know he was out here cutting my yard and knowing he’s having a 15-year-old, my baby’s 13-years- old. It couldn’t be me because if it was me, they’d have me in jail instead of him,” said the neighbor.
It’s a motherly instinct police said the victim’s mom was lacking.
“Obviously, she knew that Mr. Watson was with her daughter,” said Chief Green.
The Chief said the 36-year-old mother will likely face charges once the investigation wraps for negligence and failure to protect.
He said he doesn’t know why she would’ve allowed the rape to happen.
“It’s very disturbing any parents would not just come forth and report that to police,” he said.
The Chief said Watson’s been a registered sex offender since 2011 and is currently a person of interest in a similar case out of Clarksdale, Mississippi involving a teen.
