MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Neighbors are grieving after the death of a 4-month-old baby.

Police said the child was found unresponsive in the 3400 block of Starsdale Street near Knight Arnold Road and Perkins Road in Memphis.

The baby was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died.

Police said this is an active investigation.

WREG spoke with neighbors who said the mother and grandmother did everything they could to save their baby.

“When I heard her cry out this morning, I ran out to see the mother in pain, and I hugged her,” neighbor Valrie Sanders said.

Sanders said when she heard that cry for help from her neighbor Saturday, she did everything she could to rush to the family’s aid.

She said the mother of the 4-month-old was screaming, hoping someone could help save her baby.

“I ran inside the house, and that’s where I saw the grandmother who knows how to…give the baby, try to save her, and she was on the phone with the operator and she was doing everything to save that baby,” she explained.

“That’s very sad, obviously,” another neighbor, Gary Blinckman, said.

Although officers aren’t saying much about this investigation, neighbors said they have no reason to believe foul play was involved. They said there wasn’t anything the mother wouldn’t have done for her child.

“They loved her, she was a beautiful little baby,” Sanders added.

People in the neighborhood said they’re going to do everything they can to provide comfort to the mother who’s mourning the death of her child.
