MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Housing Authority is opening a new public housing waitlist for select communities in August, offering affordable housing opportunities for those in need.

“We encourage individuals and families to review the available units to ensure the space meets your needs before applying. That way, we can ensure a smooth and efficient placement process,” said Dexter Washington, chief executive officer at Memphis Housing Authority.

In preparation for the opening of new waitlists, MHA will contact existing applicants from July 28 to August 1 to confirm their interest in remaining on the waitlist. Those who do not respond will be removed from the list.

Those who are currently on other MHA waitlists, such as the Housing Choice Voucher or Project-Based Voucher programs, can also apply for public housing using their existing RentCafe login information. Unlike the HCV and PBV programs, anyone who applies for public housing and qualifies will eventually receive housing if they remain eligible and available.

For assistance with the RentCafe portal, call 901-544-1107 or email phwaitlist@memphisha.org.

MHA central office is closed due to construction.

Applications must be submitted online at the MHA portal; however, anyone without internet access can apply at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library and the Cornelia Crenshaw Memorial Library.

If you are an applicant, regularly check the portal and your email for updates.

“We’ve been getting quite a few calls and emails, you know, since Monday. So we are filtering through all of those, and we’re, we’re hitting them one by one. So if you’re in, you know, if you’re in that group, you will get a return call for some assistance,” said Tomecia Brown, Director of Compliance and Training, MHA.

Applications can be found here and will be available from August 6 to August 7.
