MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Fourth of July celebration ended with tragedy after a man was shot and killed overnight.

A woman was also injured in the shooting and the suspect is still on the run.

“It’s the fourth of July and somebody just wants to get away with doing something and blend in with the fireworks and that’s what they did,” a resident said.

What was supposed to be a time of celebration quickly turned to devastation.

Memphis Police said just before 2 a.m., a man and woman were shot at a home in the 3500 block of Bowen Avenue.

Both were rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but the male victim later died of his injuries.

A man living on the property who didn’t want to be identified said that the victims were his friends.

“They were just resting on the side of the yard, just lounging out. We were camping out and such,” he said. “After a short amount of time, they were both shot point-blank.”

The man told WREG that he had only stepped away for a moment when the shooter walked from behind the home and shot the couple.

He said the gunman disappeared immediately after.

“It was either targeted or completely reckless,” the resident said.

The witness said he doesn’t know who shot his friends or why.

MPD didn’t release many details but said the shooting stemmed from some sort of dispute.

Those living in the neighborhood said people are known to wander around the property and are often seen sleeping in the yard or on the front porch.

“I’ve been in this situation where I’ve been letting them stay in my spot simply because they’ve always been looking out for me,” the resident said.

Memphis Police said the double shooting is still under investigation.
