MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police have identified the woman who was killed in her East Memphis home and charged her grandson with the murder.

Memphis police said Sonya Dates, 58, was found bleeding from the head with a hammer next to her on Wednesday afternoon by her daughter in the 1800 block of South Perkins Road. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say her car, a 2020 Chevrolet Camaro, was also reported missing.

Sonya’s grandson, 23-year-old Kerrien Dates, was arrested in Jackson, Tennessee, and charged with first-degree murder and theft of property, $10,000-$60,000.

Utilizing the Flock Camera System, investigators said they were able to track the vehicle to Jackson, Tennessee.

Jackson Police say when they found the missing Camaro, they asked the driver, later identified as Kerrien Dates, why he was being pulled over.

That is when officers say Kerrien made a spontaneous utterance saying, “I hit Sonya in the head with a hammer and I think I killed her.”

He was then taken into custody by Jackson Police without incident.

Court records show that Kerrien lived at the same address as Sonya on Perkins. His mother says that he and Sonya had recently been having altercations, where she had to kick him out of her home for safety reasons.

Homicide investigators say Sonya died with four blunt force trauma wounds to the back of her head, caused by the hammer found next to her that also had blood on it. They say she had her backpack on, along with her lunch bag, as if she had just come in the house from work.

A neighbor who identified Kerrien Dates from his mug shot said she often saw him walking circles around the duplex where he lived and thought the behavior was odd. The neighbor said she was not home when the incident happened.

Kerrien was booked in the Shelby County Jail on Thursday afternoon. He is due in court on Monday morning.
