MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Several families had to be evacuated Tuesday after stairs collapsed at a Medical District apartment, the Memphis Fire Department confirmed.

Residents WREG spoke with said none of this is okay.

“We ain’t got nothing now until they fix this,” resident Kenitha Smith said. “The fire department told us we can not go into that house until they fix all of this.”

Smith said this was the final straw.

On Tuesday afternoon, Memphis Fire Rescue responded to an apartment complex on 1016 Peabody after the stairs on the second floor collapsed.

Residents are now left stranded.

“I just started a new job today so I can try to move,” Smith said.

Memphis Fire sent out a statement saying in part, “At this time, no injuries have been reported. A total of 10 residents were safely evacuated from the second floor.”

Smith said the collapse could’ve been avoided, especially after she reported her concerns about the upstairs walkway last month.

“I emailed them on the 17th,” Smith said. “I thought that would’ve been an emergency.”

She went on to say the complex recently went through management changes in January of this year.

However, she claims that the complex’s problems were apparent long before the switch.

“Whatever was going on upstairs, water would leak and my bathroom ceiling collapsed a couple of times,” Smith said. “They came out to fix it, but the thing is, it did it like three, four times over the course of two years.”

Smith said no matter how you put it, the situation is unacceptable.

“Nobody should have to be afraid to walk inside they house thinking the d— stairs – I’m sorry. Thinking the stairs is going to fall any day,” Smith said.

The Red Cross is reportedly helping families who can’t return to their units.

Code enforcement has been called out to determine if the building is safe.
