DRESDEN, Tenn. — Day three of David Swift’s trial for the murder of his wife Karen in 2011 was underway Thursday.

David Swift made it clear during interviews with investigators he did not approve of Karen’s friendship with Cathy and Bill Bona, saying the couple would have nude “hot tub” parties.

“I tried to pull Karen out of the situation,” he told investigators on a recording played in court. “I said, listen, it’s not good to be over there. I see what’s going on now.”

Swift is charged with premeditated first-degree murder in his wife’s death. She was found dead from blunt force trauma not far from her Dyer County home, weeks after she was reported missing.

Cathy Bona testified that became friends with Karen Swift shortly after Swift moved to Dyersburg, and came to know Karen as a good mother of four. But it was clear she wanted out of her marriage to husband David Swift.

“The controlling, the belittling accusations. She was ready to be done with the marriage because she needed to get out,” Bonna said.

Bona says David would stalk Karen, continually calling her cell phone.

“There was one night when we were hanging out on my porch and he called 25 times” in 30 minutes, she said.

Cathy Bona testified both David and Karen attended a party where some people were wearing swimsuits, and some were not. Karen was not, she said.

Bill Bona told the court neither he nor his wife were friends with David, who accused Bill Bonna of inappropriate conduct with Karen.

Bonna denied he ever had a romantic relationship with Karen.

The Bonnas were questioned just after Karen disappeared. They provided DNA samples, and got angry when investigators asked if the Bonnas were swingers.

“We don’t operate in this world,” Bill Bona said. “We’ve never been a part of anything like this and it was very uncomfortable and unsettling.”

The medical examiner also testified Thursday, providing graphic details from Karen Swift’s autopsy.

WREG will continue coverage of the trial.
