MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One by one, people stopped by the Memphis Police Raines Station to pay their respects to a fallen police officer.

On Friday, police officer Joseph McKinney, 26, was killed during a shootout in the area of Horn Lake and Charter Avenue.

“I just want to thank them for serving. You put your life on the line and they take your life,” supporter Cherryl Crite said.

For Crite, McKinney’s death was a personal one, since her daughter is a major with the Memphis Police Department.

“Every time an officer gets shot. Ok. Could that be my baby,” Crite said. “Even though she’s not on the streets, she’s still got to serve. Is somebody going to take her out?”

Memphis police say that McKinney was killed while responding to a suspicious vehicle call.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says as officers approached the stolen vehicle, the suspects opened fire.

One of the suspected gunmen, 18-year-old Jaylen Lobley, was killed during the shootout. A 17-year-old suspect was critically wounded.

Two other officers were also injured during the shootout.

In a post on social media, Memphis Police say “The love that the community has shown is overwhelming. Officer McKinney was well-loved and respected and we will continue his work.”

“When these things happen, officers come back the next day and answer the call for service,” Reverend and former Memphis Police Colonel, James Kirkwood said. “They’re answering these calls continuously getting right back in harm’s way.”

Memphis Police say McKinney’s squad car will remain in place at least through the weekend for anyone who would still like to pay their respects.
