MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man was shot and killed just after midnight Monday in the Medical District near Poplar and Manassas, the seventh deadly shooting in Memphis since Friday morning.
The victim was found behind a building and rushed to the Regional Medical Center, but he did not survive his injuries.
“I was right there. I seen the blood coming out of his body,” said a friend, who didn’t want to be identified. “He said he had been shot. That was it. That was his last words.”
The friend of the victim says they were on Manassas headed to a convenience store on Poplar when a car pulled up and someone fired at least eight shots at him. He says he ran for cover.
He says the shooting may have been the result of a fight the victim had with his ex-girlfriend an hour earlier. He says his friend was shot twice in the chest and he watched him take his last breath.
“They pulled up and said, ‘Who’s messing with my auntie?’ and started shooting at him. … I ran. What else am I going to do? I have kids, I have to get out of the way.”
The friend says the victim was a father of three, worked hard and didn’t deserve to die.
So far, detectives haven’t released any information on a gunman.
